Baby rabbits - Little Red Farmstead
Homesteading

Weekly Farmstead Photos (Dec. 7-13)

Between the warm temperatures and all the babies out in the barn, you’d think that it was springtime around here. (Wishful thinking, right?!)

Baby rabbits - Little Red Farmstead

First, there were baby bunnies born on December 4th. There were originally nine, but one didn’t make it. The remaining eight seem to be gaining weight and doing great, thankfully! Their eyes should be opening any day now,

This year's brooder setup - Little Red Farmstead

Our chick brooder and heat lamp setup came out of storage this past weekend. This year, it’s nice to have space in the workshop (attached to the barn) to set it up instead of having it in our dining room. (*Ahem*) Keeping all that dust OUT of the house is a nice change!

2015/2016 laying hens-to-be - Little Red Farmstead

And here are the babies that will be our 2016 layer flock! There are eleven total: three Australorp, three Barred Rock, and five Easter Eggers. (They’ll be joining our 4 Buff Orpingtons and 2 Production Reds from 2015.) Last year, we didn’t get our chicks till March. I’m hoping by starting a few months earlier we’ll be able to get these ladies outside and integrated with the flock earlier in the summer, and hopefully have more eggs by the end of June instead of August.

Farm selfie - Little Red Farmstead

A backyard farm-selfie, because why not?

And a few shots from our Instagram (@littleredfarmstead): More cheesy selfies (on the way to Ben’s 4-H Christmas party), Myles passed out on the chair, new chicks, our brooder, baby bunnies getting checked and weighed, and chickens (as always) at the door!

Amanda lives with her family on a little red farmstead in northwestern Pennsylvania. By day she's a web developer specializing in WordPress and in her off time she enjoys working with goats and other livestock on the farm, canning, knitting, and crocheting.
