The Kids are Here!
Candy kidded around 8 AM Monday morning. She had one buckling (on the left in the photo above), and one doeling (on the right). The doeling is called Maizey (or “Mae” for short, as they were born on the first of May). The buck doesn’t have a name yet, but I think the favorite so far is Jigsaw because his black and white pattern on his rump looks like a jigsaw puzzle piece.
I had checked on her at about 7:20 AM and saw some discharge, but I thought she was still in very early labor. I decided to head in to work. I woke Mike up and mentioned I thought she’d be kidding later in the day, then I packed up and left. At around 7:45, I was stopped in morning traffic, and decided to check my barn webcam on my phone — I could see Candy licking her little buckling! I called Mike and Ben and told them there was at least one kid on the ground and to hurry out to the barn. By the time they got outside, Candy was cleaning off her second kid. Myles and I got there a few minutes later, and we all sat together in the barn and watched mama bond with her new babies.
We were hoping maybe there would be a third, but around 9:30 Candy passed her placenta (talk about a first-hand biology lesson for the boys!) and settled down with her kids. So just two this year — but two very adorable, healthy kids — so no complaints!
I’ll share more photos soon. (Keep an eye on our Instagram and Facebook pages for the latest.) The barn is dark, so it doesn’t make for very good photos. I’m hoping it will warm up next week so they can get outside and we can get some pictures in the sunshine!
